Buying a keyboard – by Ash ley Southam, The Piano Guy

There are many different questions when it comes to buying a keyboard. How much should I pay, how many keys it needs and so on. A lot of it really depends on the buyer and your own personal preference. The best way to tell if the keyboard is right for you is if it “feels” right. But, in saying that, there are a few simple guidelines that can help you out come purchase time.

One of the great things about having so many different keyboards to choose from is that you can find one at a suitable price. The first thing is you want to make sure the keyboard actually works. The problem with keyboards is that as they get older they tend to decay a bit. So be careful buying a keyboard before you’ve actually played it and checked the keys, all the buttons and so on.

The next step is looking at how many keys it has. I’m often asked “how many keys should I get?” The answer is really down to personal preference and what exactly you’re using your keyboard for. My advice is to get a keyboard with the full 88 keys. But 76 and even 61 will usually be enough. If you have the choice I think either 88 or 76 keys is best. If you were just using a small range of the keyboard and it’s more for recording interesting samples and so on, then fewer keys is fine. Most professionals will use 88 keys.

The next thing to look at is weighted keys or “synth” action. This means what the feel of the actual keys is like. This again really depends on personal taste. Weighted keys: this means that the keys on the keyboard have the same feel and weight as keys on a standard piano. A lot of trained pianists will go this route, myself included. I don’t like to use synth style keys but that’s entirely my personal taste. One of the benefits of playing on a keyboard with weighted keys is that if you never played an acoustic piano before you should easily be able to adjust quickly because your hands will be used to it. Synth style keys also have their advantages. Because they’re not weighted it’s a lot easier to play them faster.

Another important aspect is the velocity and after touch of the keyboard. Velocity refers to whether how hard you hit the keys affects how loud the sound that comes out, so that if you lightly touch the keyboard you will get a nice quite sound. Similarly if you hit down hard you will get a nice loud reaction. After touch refers to the sensitivity to the sound and touch after you hit the note and hold it down. If you play a note and you want it to ring the way an acoustic piano does, after touch is very important. Personally I believe that velocity and after touch is VERY important and any keyboard you have should really have these things catered for.

So there are a lot of things to consider when looking at keyboards. Ultimately I believe a lot of it comes down to personal taste and what your instincts tell you about the keyboard itself. Remember, you want it to be something that you can spend a lot of time on so make sure that you are completely happy with what you end up with.

Digital piano is a current electronic musical instrument especially designed to serve primarily as an alternative to the traditional piano, in both the way it feels to play and in the sound it produced. Some digital pianos are as well shaped to look like an acoustic piano. As digital pianos have many advantages over normal pianos.

In most of the implementations, a digital piano offers a different variety of piano timbres and normally some other sound as well. For instance, a digital piano might have settings for a performance grand piano, an upright piano, a tack piano, and different electric pianos like the Fender Rhodes and Wurlitzer. Some digital pianos as well incorporate other basics “synthesizer” sounds like string ensemble, and provide settings to combine them with piano.

The sounds offered by a digital piano are at times PCM samples available in ROM. Despite the fact that a digital piano plays models, it is not a sampler because it needs the capability to record samples. It does, however, be eligible as a romper. Other, more superior brands (like Yamaha & Kawai) use other sound sampling systems like AWM (advanced sign memory) or Harmonic Imaging.

The samples stored in digital pianos are generally of extremely high quality and shaped by using world-class pianos, costly microphones, and other high quality preamps in an experts recording studio.

Digital pianos do have restrictions on the authenticity with that they replicate the sound of any acoustic piano. These as well comprise of the lack of implementation of harmonic tones, which result when some mixtures of notes are sounded, restricted to polyphony, and a lack of innate reverberation when the piano is actually played percussively. They as well lack the secondary acoustic noises related with piano playing, like the sounds of pedals being low and the related machinery broken up within the piano that some in fact consider a benefit. These limitations relate to most acoustic piano instruments and their sampled foils, the difference normally being described as “visceral”.

For the wide majority of listeners, however, expert recordings made with a digital piano are hard or not possible to differentiate from a recording shaped with a original piano. Many digital pianos comprise an amplifier and loudspeakers so that no extra equipment is necessary to play the instrument. Most digital pianos include headphone output.

Electronic pianos are keyboard instruments are designed so they can simulate the timbre of an acoustic piano by using an electronic circuit. Pianos were widely used musical instruments in the old days. Almost every house had a piano. Pianos were the most popular musical instruments all through the 18th century and even after that. It was as late as the 20th century that the use of the electronic pianos came into existence. Electronic pianos were widely used and now, there are many used electronic pianos available for sale. The best part of the electronic piano is that they do not require tuning. The traditional pianos had to be tuned from time to time so that the sound quality remained the best.Used electronic pianos do not have to be tuned and hence they can be used as is. The used electronic pianos will be available in all the shops that sell musical instruments. But before you buy used electronic pianos make sure that you know what you want, like size, colour, weighted keys. Just do a bit of homework first. If you feel that you are a beginner and do not know much about pianos then it will always be better to take somebody with you who will be able to identify a used electronic piano as a good one. The advantage of buying used electronic pianos is that you do not have to pay the original price and you can save a lot of money.Beginners can start with a used electronic piano, and later, when you become an expert you can always get a new piano for yourself. You can also find used electronic pianos on the internet; there are many websites that will give great offers on used pianos. Just use the same kind of common sense you would on the high street and you could well pick up an incredible deal, and there’s a lot out there, you just have to find them.

You will see upright acoustic pianos every where, perhaps at your favorite restaurant, or at a school hall. You used to see them at your church, but perhaps not so much these days, as the use of digital pianos becomes more prevalent.
You like the class and sound of an acoustic piano so much that you want one for yourself, and perhaps have not considered going the digital route.
Perhaps you want to give your child a musical education, and have settled on the piano as the instrument of choice, as it is by far the most popular of instruments and there are plenty of teachers around.
So once you have decided that the piano will be your instrument you will have to make a decision on what to buy.
Probably the first thing you would do is go to a piano dealer and see what is on offer. You will see lots of wonderful pianos, which are almost like furniture, and you will love them until you see the price and the amount of space it takes up.
So although you may desperately want one, an acoustic piano may not be affordable and you wouldn’t have the room for it, especially if you live in an apartment.
If you are buying one for your child to learn to play, you have to remember that piano lessons are hard work, and your child may want to give up after a couple of months. I know my own children lasted for a year, but that was it.
If this is the case, and you don’t play yourself, you now have an expensive piece of idle furniture taking up a vast amount of space in your living room.
A viable alternative has to be the digital piano. A lot of them these days look very much like a traditional upright acoustic piano, and the sound is very similar.
An acoustic piano is a mechanical instrument where the depression of the keys causes muffled hammers to strike against strings, which produces the familiar sounds, while digital pianos produce sound electronically.
The sounds produced come from previously recorded sounds of a real piano, and certainly with the top of the line digital pianos, like the Yamaha, the sounds are going to be of an extremely high quality, and practically indistinguishable to the untrained ear.
There is another argument against digital pianos, which is that the feel of the keys is different from that on an acoustic piano, and this used to be true. With an acoustic piano you can actually feel the hammers striking against real strings, and can adjust the weight you put on the keys according to the sound you wish to make.
The left hand keys on a keyboard are harder to play, especially for a right handed person, and the strength of the key depression is lighter on the treble keys.
However, because this was a sticking point in the arguments about the merits of digital v acoustic, piano manufacturers such as Yamaha have addressed this problem and the modern models can almost replicate the touch and feel of the traditional acoustic piano.
The keys may be described as being semi-weighted, weighted, hammer, and graded hammer. The graded hammer is recognised as being the best, while the semi-weighted and weighted actions are the ones normally used for the entry level models.

Digital keyboards that feature full 88 touch sensitive keys will perhaps be the best choice for you if you wish to capture the feel of an acoustic piano. A damper pedal attached to it would be even better. However, you have to keep in mind that keyboards of this variety will set you back by $1000 more. These kinds of digital keyboards are ideal for beginners or those who are into their 1st year music lessons. The starting price for cheap acoustic pianos is around $2000. So you can naturally guess how much an expensive electric keyboard will cost you. When you purchase a keyboard, you must check to see that it has USB connectivity and PC connectivity. Such features will raise the price bar higher, but ultimately you will be the gainer in the long run. Don’t think of digital keyboards as substitute for an acoustic piano, rather it should complement or be an adjunct to the latter. If you are a complete novice who wants to test the piano learning waters or wants to gift your children a piano to encourage him or her to take up piano lessons or if you are not sure about the student’s interest levels and don’t want to waste a lot of money on something super expensive. Then the cheaper varieties of smaller keyboards will be ideal for you and they cost less than $200 and are therefore, extremely pocket friendly. You can make do with these types of keyboards for quite a few months. These types of digital keyboards have a rudimentary type of damper pedal, the keys might often turn out to be not so touch sensitive and there will be no more than 4/5 octaves. A full keyboard usually features around 8 to 9 octaves. Another feature that you must check while purchasing a digital keyboard is whether the instrument is MIDI compatible or not.Nowadays, you can avail yourself of different models featuring both complex and simple kinds of keyboards, which are sold with piano training software, and the makers nowadays make available different varieties of software and hardware combinations.

In the world of music the latest entry has been the electronic keyboard. There are global manufacturers of connected software. Electronic technology has been incorporated in synthesizers, portable keyboards, digital pianos, home organs, sound modules, sequencers, drum machines and the like. There are keyboard controllers for classical and theatre organs as well as keyboard communications systems.

Whether in the classroom or home it is fun and easy to churn out music with the help of electronic keyboards. The electronic keyboard can be any one of many things – organ, piano, synthesizer or sampler. Most the electronic keyboards can be linked to the computer for experiencing the feel of real multimedia.

The digital piano combines in it the sound of acoustic piano with the fine control and expediency of an electronic device. This is done by playing reverse digital recordings or samples letting out different sounds as the player presses various notes. Like the ordinary piano this electronic model responds to the touch of the musician increasing or decreasing in volume. There is also a sustain pedal.

Some electronic keyboards are weighted so that player gets the same feel as that of an acoustic piano. The bonus point is that digital pianos are incredibly cheaper when compared to their senior cousins. These occupy less space and is minus the botheration of tuning. By using headphones it is possible to practice late at night without bothering the family and neighbours. Some sophisticated models include disk drives that allow for orchestral accompaniments and even recordings.

Electronic keyboards in organs imitate the sounds of the conventional pipe, reed and tone-wheel organs. Here again the size is fraction that of the senior organ and the price is modest – to say the least.

Electronic keyboards reach their crescendo of success in synthesizers and samplers. There are many types of synthesizers – facilities for playing back, recordings and creating exotic sounds with fine sensitive controls. There are voluminous libraries of pre-programmed sounds for the asking. Most of the synthesizers and samplers are termed multiimbral. This means playing back of many sounds simultaneously.

Another name to be acquainted with in the modern age of electronic music is MIDI or Musical Instrument Digital Interface. It is a kind of standard language in the music world that allows electronic keyboards to be inter-connected and also to be linked to the computer. Music softwares are a must for students of harmony and composition.

Portable electronic keyboards are compact, light and easy to carry. Possessing one is real cool fun. The speakers are built in and thus no external ones are required. These are chameleons of the music world and can change its character bringing out sounds of a dozen instruments at the wish of the player – piano, organ and even drums.

The market of electronic keyboards is growing very fast. Manufacturers have responded with a mixture of keyboard products. The primary has been promotion of electronic keyboard through publication and advertising enabling the public to know about it. A target has been set for introducing this new contrivance amongst music educators of music technology in major universities across US. Setting up websites for this purpose of enlightening people about electronic keyboards has also been a major step forward.

An important part of music education is music technology as can be seen the world over in television and film productions as well as the Internet. The learning and application of electronic keyboards has become relatively easy and the impact is more powerful than before. In the age of electronics changes on the musical front too are happening overnight. Thus updating is an important part of publications.

Electronic pianos are becoming very popular day by day as they are portable and have a more manageable size and of the various kinds of pianos that are sold, the Yamaha Electronic Piano is the number one bestseller and has been so for quite some time. The Yamaha range is a vast one and there are many different kinds of models to choose from. One model features 61 keys, headphone jack, tonal volume and controls, controls such as treble, bass, tremolo, decay, pitch etc while the weight is around 89 pounds. On top of that there are added freebies like sustain pedal and a travel case.Since it is rugged and extremely portable, it offers a blend of good looks with functionality and also boasts qualities like sound variety, expression and touch. With real ease you can choose to shift between or flit between different color sounds on the very same keyboard. Although this piano is an electronic one, while playing on the keyboard you will get the feel of playing on an acoustic piano because the sound and feel of the keyboard is similar.Another feature is that almost all the electronic pianos in this range are velocity sensitive or touch sensitive. When you strike hard it will produce a crashing note and if you strike softly, the note produced will be softer. However, the actions are not complicated and the features are extremely user friendly. Most reviewers have rated the Yamaha Electronic Piano range very high and at times 5 out of 5 stars from learned reviewers. The range does not have any cons as such but some reviewers do feel that the pianos could have added a few more voices. But the pros will outclass the cons. You are getting excellent value for money, there is a graded keyboard feel, there are features like dual voice mode, onboard MIDI sequencer, 64 notes polyphony and the sound produced by the Yamaha Electronic Piano is a crisp dynamic electric sound with an acoustic feel.
