Keyboards come in a variety of sizes with various bells and whistles depending on your needs. Of course, this also means they come in a wide price range, so it’s important to weigh up what you need with what you can afford, as well as ensuring you get the best value for money. Whether it’s your first ever keyboard, or you’re simply adding to your existing collection, it’s imperative that you ask a few key questions before you buy any model.
Firstly, you should ensure your keyboard is a full-sized model. Keyboards range from around half-sized for kids right up to full sized keys covering a number of octaves. It is important that you make sure your keyboard is full size if you are serious about learning. The smaller sized keyboards will keep you going if you’re learning how to play, but soon enough you will require the full range of keys as you tackle more complex or involved pieces. Unless you want to have to upgrade after six months, don’t opt for a smaller keyboard.
The next thing to think about is whether or not your keyboard includes a stand. If it does include a stand, great. If not, you’re going to have to buy one, so factor this into your costing. Additionally, consider whether the keyboard is touch-sensitive. A touch sensitive keyboard allows you to add your own dynamics, i.e. ‘louds and softs’ as you play, to give more texture to your piece. Traditionally keyboards are not touch sensitive, which means that regardless of how hard you press a key, it always produces the same note. Touch sensitivity may come at a price, but if your are looking for anywhere near performance quality, you should make sure your keyboard has it.
Finally, you should think about adding a protective case. This will ensure you can keep the keyboard protected from the elements and external damage during transit, or when you’re not using it. Additionally, this would benefit storage, making it easier to tuck the keyboard under the bed.
When it comes to buying a keyboard, there is no element more important than sitting down and trying it for yourself. Ask the salesman if it’s ok to have a go, and try out all the various functions. See if you like the set up, and see how easy it is to navigate the different effects. This will be the most influential step in making your decision, and should allow you, in combination with the above considerations, to figure out which keyboard is best for you.

These days with the help of Internet, the world has shrunk to become one big city. Through Internet, you can contact anybody and can chat face to face while sitting in different parts of the world. Nowadays, it is not necessary for you to visit go to a shop to buy your desired products. Similarly you can buy a Keyboard too from online keyboard shops by visiting their website from your home. Just like all other things have two aspects, buying instruments from online stores also has some benefits and drawbacks.
If you go through the Internet you could find out hundreds of online keyboard shops from where you can order your desired keyboard. These websites also give you proper information about each and every model they offer for sale. This information helps you to choose type of keyboard model you want to own. They provide you with a wide range to choose from and if you wish you could have a look at every keyboard model. This is not possible if you visit a store physically. The online process offers endless options. Any kind of model and brand, sometimes even rare models are easily available at the online stores. Whereas, in the stores the options are most of the time less and the rare models need special ordering.
The drawback of buying from online keyboard shops is that you cannot have a demonstration of the keyboard. You will have to depend on the information provided on the websites. You can discuss about the keyboards any try them if you physically visit the store and have a clear idea about the instrument and the service provided by them.
If you are a beginner and do not have enough knowledge about sophisticated keyboards, then it is always better to have a experienced person who has some good knowledge about keyboards by your side while looking through various websites for online purchase. Apart from keyboards you can also buy keyboard accessories like stand, bag, cover, case and other sound processors from online keyboard shops.
While buying keyboard online you have to make the payment first. So, you need to be very careful before paying for it. Careful in the sense that is you should be firm about you decision and choice. You should makeup your mind properly about the model of your choice and then do the payment. Although there are some online shops that have a return policy too, which allows the buyer to return the instrument after trying it out within the time given by the shop. So, while selecting online shops return back policy is a very vital factor and buying from an online store that do not offer any return back policy is a very bad idea.
The prices quoted by online keyboard shops are usually little cheaper. Most of the time they offer a discounted prices. Apart from the price of the instrument they might also charge some delivery cost.
There are many websites from where you can order keyboards. You can also visit directly to the website of the manufacturer (for e.g. Official website of Korg, Roland, Yamaha or any other keyboard manufacturer) and choose the model you like the most. In this case, the genuineness of the keyboard is guaranteed.

Keyboards are considered as the most important instrument in a band as a keyboard player has the main responsibility to play tracks and at the same time play the keys with the song. You can say that it is the spinal cord of any usual musical concert provided they are not putting emphasis on any particular musical instrument. Apart from this, if there is any concert that will highlight keyboard players, then its quite sure that you will get to hear some unusual sole touching as well as entertaining music.
A keyboard is a complete musical instrument, but still as most human beings have the typical characteristic of demanding more, there are many keyboard accessories that are introduced to satisfy this desire of the musicians.
Keyboard accessories like stand, bag and cases are some common accessories that you will get to see with every keyboard players. But many who are new in this field may not know that there are many different categories among these common accessories also.
If you go to buy a keyboard stand in market you will find minimum four to five types of stands – Single X Stand, Double X Stand, Table Top Stand, Double Tire Stand and 3-Tire Stand. You can find these models in any good musical instrument store. Apart from these models there are many more sophisticated models. Similarly, there are many types of keyboard bags and cases also manufactured by different companies. You can differentiate cases with the help of size and weight. Some cases also have wheels for the carrying convenience.
Brands like Roland, Casio, Korg, Yamaha and many other keep on introducing accessories with new utilities. These keyboard accessories help to produce different sound effects and give a totally different experience to the listeners.
Roland EV5 Expression Pedal, Moog Music EP2 Expression Pedal, Yamaha FC7 Volume Foot Control Pedal, M-Audio Expression Pedal, MIDI Solutions Merger 2 Input MIDI Merger, MIDI Solutions Thru 2 – Output Active MIDI Thru Box, MIDI Solutions Quadra Thru Processor, Boss FV50L Stereo Volume Pedal, Akai MFC 42 Kit etc. are some of the very famous keyboard accessories.

In this article, I will discuss those optional extras are they optional or do you actually need them. If you want to read previous articles in this series start with How to buy a keyboard (Part1) at Mikes Music Room.

Having read this series of articles you have set your budget, you have seen and listened to your keyboard in the flesh, you have the features you want on your keyboard, so that’s it, your ready to start learning. Right? Not quite.

Now you need to deal with the dreaded optional extra. I do not have a problem with optional extras as long as that’s what they are and not necessary. An essential part of a keyboard is the power supply. Most keyboards in your price range use a plug in power supply and because some of these keyboards can be powered by batteries as well, some manufactures will charge you for the power supply and call it an optional extra. In my opinion, this is very sneaky and very naughty. Before you agree to buy a keyboard make sure the power supply is included in the price. My opinion on this is that if it is a deal breaker so be it. Power supplies can cost about £25.00 and this money can be used for other items you will need.

The next item you will need is a keyboard stand unless you want to place your keyboard on the dining table or the floor (not recommended). Normally you would leave the keyboard in the same place, so it is useful to have a stand. These can cost from £25.00 to £50.00 and I would recommend an adjustable height stand rather than a static stand. I would defiantly barter to get a stand thrown in with the price of the keyboard; it’s always worth a try. This of course should not be a deal breaker as the stand is an extra.

The above items especially the first one are important. Other less important items include a keyboard bench to sit on, not essential if you have chairs at home and an adjustable keyboard stand. A volume pedal and sustain pedal, which are connected to the back of the keyboard, normally using a jack plug. These will be rarely used. Headphones can be useful for your family’s sanity during the early learning months.

Finally, the last item on my list is of course optional but I recommend you make it essential, and that’s keyboard lessons. Many music shops will offer a free keyboard lesson to get you started. These lessons are normally thirty-minute lessons and after your free lesson will cost between £10.00 and £20.00 per lesson. You will also need to buy music for your lessons, which again can cost £10.00 to £20.00 but this music should last from six to twelve months depending on how fast you can learn.

I hope this series of articles has given you sufficient information to buy a keyboard and start learning. If your unsure about keyboard lessons then try out my Lesson 1 e-book at Mikes Music Room, which will get you started and you can download it immediately.

If you are a learner or you are going to get a keyboard for your offspring, then you don’t have to pay out a small fortune to get yourself a tremendous quality, heavily featured portable electronic keyboard. For a used beginner’s midi keyboard, anything up to fifty pounds will be adequate and if you wish for a new electronic piano keyboard then one hundred pounds will do the job. Before you buy your first keyboard, you should take the time to check out some features you will find useful as a beginner. Velocity Sensitive KeyboardUsing a velocity sensitive keyboard means you can add expression to your playing. By adjusting the weight you apply to the keys will control whether the sound is loud or soft. Force down powerfully and the sound is loud, press lightly and the sound is soft.Full Size KeysAgain, most modern midi keyboards nowadays have got full size piano keys. Some older portable electronic keyboards may have half size keys. These were introduced to aid young children with smaller fingers to play the midi keyboard more easily. This of course is rubbish and provides no useful aid to learning whatsoever and I recommend you avoid these types of keyboards.Stands For KeyboardsIf you purchase a secondhand piano keyboard, you might be lucky and get a keyboard stand with it. When buying a brand-new keyboard, stands are classed as an optional extra. Still, it’s worth the additional expence to buy one and if you have children of different ages and sizes, the fact that it’s adjustable comes in very handy.

The Yamaha YPG 625 keyboard has a new voice technology and this has attracted the masses towards it. This keyboard debuted in the year 2006. This is a portable keyboard which is better than its predecessors. Before this the DGX keyboards were available, the YPG replaced the DGX with its brand new features. The best thing about this keyboard is that it has 88 keys for different actions. The 88 key keyboard is a first for the Yamaha brand at this price. The piano has a real acoustic feel to it. New and debut piano players will be delighted with all the features of the keyboard. It is a lot better than light weighted keyboards. The Yamaha YPG 625 also has a 6 track sequencer. If you have a hidden composer or arranger within you then the sequencer on this keyboard will be extremely helpful. It also has polyphony of 32 notes. This keyboard also has an authentic piano touch. In the lower end it is quite heavy and it gets lighter in the higher portion. Another good quality of the keyboard is that it is very responsive. It also has a built in recorder and it works really well and is easy to use.Another great feature is the education suite that is presented by Yamaha itself from within the keyboard. It also has USB connectivity which is ideal for transferring files to and from a PC or laptop. The keyboard also comes with a wooden stand, power adapter as well as a sustain pedal. The Yamaha YPG 625 has another great feature. It has almost 500 instrument voices that are realistic and has a song arranger which is quite easy to handle.
