The first thing you need to learn before playing the piano is the piano notes. What are they called? A regular piano keyboard has 88 keys on it including the black notes. The first notes to learn are the white notes, but how do go about memorizing the names of all those white notes. There are many different sizes of keyboards. Sixty-one and seventy-six note keyboards are standard for electronic keyboards, and pianos are traditionally eighty-eight notes. No matter what the size of keyboard there are only seven white notes to learn. Black notes are associated to the white notes and are known as sharps and flats. So, firstly let’s learn the seven note names. They are C, D, E, F, G, A and B. Wherever on the piano you play you will be using one of these notes names. You will see that from C to G is alphabetical, the reason I haven’t started with A is because when you start learning to play the piano you will be using C as one of the first notes you ever play and it will also be a very important note and will help you relate to the other notes particularly on sheet music. Now you know the notes, your next step is to find them on a piano. The easiest way to do this is to look at the piano keyboard, if you don’t have a keyboard, find a picture of one on the internet. Now, just look at the keyboard carefully and you will see sets of two black notes and sets of three black notes. Look at a set of two black notes first. Starting with the black note on the left, notice a white note to its immediate left this note is called C, the white note to its immediate right is called D, and this is also between the two black notes. Finally, the white note to the right of the second black note is called E. So all the notes in this section of two black notes starting at the left are called C, D and E. Depending on the size of your keyboard you will see up to eight sets of two black notes together, these are the same and also use our three notes C, D and E. The only difference between the sets is the pitch of the notes. On the far left of the keyboard, notes will sound lower in pitch and to the right, notes will sound higher. The next shape you are looking for is three black notes together and these notes are surrounded by four white notes. Starting from the left again these notes are called F, G, A and B. That’s it; you have learned all the white notes on a keyboard. The two black note and three note shapes are repeated on the whole keyboard and so are the notes. With a little bit of practice you should be able to find any note on the piano. Just remember that every two black note shapes are surrounded by C, D and E, and every three note shape is surrounded by F, G, A and B.

Buying a portable keyboard can be a very confusing task when you are not sure what to look for out of so many different interesting models. So it is very important to acquire some knowledge about the manufacturers, number of keys each model has and the connection i.e. whether it works with MIDI port or USB.
There are many well-known synthesizer brands in the market like Yamaha, Casio, Korg, Roland and some more. Apart from these there are many cheaper alternatives too, but you cannot expect equally good quality output from these brands. You may not find a good quality portable keyboard at a cheap price, but rest assure paying higher will be worth it. You will not get much confused if you keep your mind set for some particular brand.
There are keyboards in market with 32, 49, 61, 76, and 88 keys. Choosing the number of keys depends upon your use and knowledge. If you are a beginner then keyboards with 32 or 49 keys will be enough. Those that are with 61, 76 or 88 keys are good for the professionals or players who have completed a few levels.
A full sized piano has 88 keys. So if you want to learn piano with the help of a keyboard then an 88 keys full-sized keyboard is a must. The lesser the keys the more is the keyboard portable. The more the keyboard is handy, lesser will be the price. The only problem with the less key keyboards like 32, 49 and 61 is that while playing a full composition, transposing is needed.
There is another option of touch response in a portable keyboard. With the help of this touch response a keyboard sounds like a piano. It also gives greater control while playing. It improves the grade of performance as the keys are sensible to your touch. If you touch the key softly then the sound will come a little low and if you press the key harder then the sound will be a comparatively louder.
There is a LCD display on portable keyboards that helps to see the settings with which you are playing it. The modern portable keyboard also shows other details such as the modes or about the lyrics or scores of the song etc. This display makes them much easier to use.
All these portable keyboards can be connected to computers. They are connected with the help of special MIDI interface or USB cord. Most of the portable keyboards also have the option of recording. With the help of this you can record songs into your keyboard and can play it whenever you like. This option is very useful as you can record what you have practiced on your keyboard and can use it to improve your performance.
You can buy your portable keyboard online, as there are many good online dealers. There are even possibilities that you can get them at a lower price as most of the websites usually quote a discounted price.

If you are a learner or you are going to get a keyboard for your offspring, then you don’t have to pay out a small fortune to get yourself a tremendous quality, heavily featured portable electronic keyboard. For a used beginner’s midi keyboard, anything up to fifty pounds will be adequate and if you wish for a new electronic piano keyboard then one hundred pounds will do the job. Before you buy your first keyboard, you should take the time to check out some features you will find useful as a beginner. Velocity Sensitive KeyboardUsing a velocity sensitive keyboard means you can add expression to your playing. By adjusting the weight you apply to the keys will control whether the sound is loud or soft. Force down powerfully and the sound is loud, press lightly and the sound is soft.Full Size KeysAgain, most modern midi keyboards nowadays have got full size piano keys. Some older portable electronic keyboards may have half size keys. These were introduced to aid young children with smaller fingers to play the midi keyboard more easily. This of course is rubbish and provides no useful aid to learning whatsoever and I recommend you avoid these types of keyboards.Stands For KeyboardsIf you purchase a secondhand piano keyboard, you might be lucky and get a keyboard stand with it. When buying a brand-new keyboard, stands are classed as an optional extra. Still, it’s worth the additional expence to buy one and if you have children of different ages and sizes, the fact that it’s adjustable comes in very handy.

The Yamaha YPG 625 keyboard has a new voice technology and this has attracted the masses towards it. This keyboard debuted in the year 2006. This is a portable keyboard which is better than its predecessors. Before this the DGX keyboards were available, the YPG replaced the DGX with its brand new features. The best thing about this keyboard is that it has 88 keys for different actions. The 88 key keyboard is a first for the Yamaha brand at this price. The piano has a real acoustic feel to it. New and debut piano players will be delighted with all the features of the keyboard. It is a lot better than light weighted keyboards. The Yamaha YPG 625 also has a 6 track sequencer. If you have a hidden composer or arranger within you then the sequencer on this keyboard will be extremely helpful. It also has polyphony of 32 notes. This keyboard also has an authentic piano touch. In the lower end it is quite heavy and it gets lighter in the higher portion. Another good quality of the keyboard is that it is very responsive. It also has a built in recorder and it works really well and is easy to use.Another great feature is the education suite that is presented by Yamaha itself from within the keyboard. It also has USB connectivity which is ideal for transferring files to and from a PC or laptop. The keyboard also comes with a wooden stand, power adapter as well as a sustain pedal. The Yamaha YPG 625 has another great feature. It has almost 500 instrument voices that are realistic and has a song arranger which is quite easy to handle.

When it comes to determining the best Yamaha portable keyboard, there are obviously lots to choose from, but for the price, the Yamaha YPT200K has to be a contender. This keyboard has been a top favourite with many learners and I think it offers the best value amongst all the Yamaha portable keyboards. The instrument is astonishingly light considered the service its going to give you and the features that it is packed with. Moreover it is very user friendly and is extremely lucid in directions. If you are buying your first keyboard then this keyboard is a great choice. There are sixty one full sized keys on the instrument along with a hundred and thirty four instrumental tones that are high quality. In fact it also contains about a hundred music styles that you can easily use for backing and enriching the music you want to play. The grand features of this instrument include properties like a brilliant stereo system that can be used with the grand piano tone and with a sound, which is unmistakably piano-ish. If you are a beginner, this Yamaha portable keyboard is all the more beneficial because it has a educational learning suite installed in it which will teach you, step by step, more than a hundred songs saved in it. As such, once you buy this keyboard you will not have the need to take keyboard lessons from others and can learn to play all by yourself. I prefer this keyboard over many others because of its amazing sound quality and variety of included songs. Any other keyboard of the same quality would cost you more than the price of the Yamaha YPT200K by at least a half as much again. Overall, when you consider the price, the functionality and even the quality, notwithstanding the brand name, this Yamaha portable keyboard is truly one of the best out there.
